Browser Wars: Google Strikes Back

October 14th, 2008

Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. Over the past few years, these browsers have become common names for web browsers on both Mac and Windows systems, with Apple’s Safari arriving to the Windows platform in June 2007.

Both Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox have been big players in the recent browser wars. While Internet Explorer has been losing ground to Firefox over the past few years, the browser wars have appeared once again; this time it’s a battle between FireFox and the other guys: Apple Safari, Opera, and now, Google Chrome. Google Chrome hit the web browsing market on September 2, 2008 for Windows XP and Vista, and was welcomed as an alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 browser. The open-sourced WebKit HTML-engine and a Google-built JavaScript engine, dubbed “V8 JavaScript”, help power the Chrome browser. » Read more: Browser Wars: Google Strikes Back

The United States Navy

October 3rd, 2008

It’s something that’s been on my mind for the past few weeks. I knew my contract with WebMD was coming to an end and I’ve put my resume out on Dice.com, CareerBuilder.com, Yahoo! HotJobs, and Monster.com, but I’ve only received view replies to jobs I’ve applied for.

The job market, along with the whole economy, has gone down the crapper and finding a job now is going to be more difficult for me. Companies are looking for the ‘all-in-one’ guy, someone who can do PHP development, Flash ActionScript and other programming languages, which I have yet to master. I was even offered a job with AT&T that required knowledge of C++ programming and Java development – I’ve never taken classes on either language. Like I said, I’ve put my resume out there, but results have been few and far between.

I was talking with my friend, Chris Bartleson, about the whole deal and he pitched the idea of joining the Navy. He’s been in for almost 6 years now and enjoys it. And the more I read the website and look at the careers they have to offer, the more intriguing the idea of joining the Navy sounds. The only part I’m some-what nervous about is the 8 weeks of basic training, and of course, cutting ties with everything here in Georgia.

The W8 Dome Light

June 17th, 2008

Earlier this month, I scraped some money together and bought a new part for my car.

(Yes I know this is going to be a lame post, but deal with me here.)

I’ve been eying this part on ECS Tuning (www.ecstuning.com) for quite some time and I finally felt like it was time to upgrade the ol’ dome light in the 2000 Golf.

My mom’s 2006 Jetta has this little feature and I liked it ever since, and I was happy to find that I could install it on my Golf. The new dome lights up the sunroof dial pattern, dome light switches, and has 2 red LED ambient lighting sources to help light up the console at night – much like LED map lights in private planes, or fighter jets.

Now, this is the 2nd part I’ve ordered from ECS Tuning, the fog-lights being the first, so I wasn’t too surprised to discover that their online installation instructions weren’t comprehensive enough to do the job professionally enough, even as a DYI project. Thankfully, I have my trusty 2 ½ inch thick Bentley Publishing Service Manual.

ECS Tuning’s instructions didn’t mention much about removing the A-pillar trim on the drivers side, nor the sun-visor, the ‘OMG-Handle’ on the driver side, or the left-side panel on the dash (with the fuse box) – which I had to remove all in order to wire the car  to power the lighting module’s sunroof dial pattern, dome light switches, and the 2 red ambient LEDs.

The whole installation took about 20 to 25 minutes, but once again I was a bit disappointed with ECS Tuning’s installation instructions, but they do have quite a list of parts (both OEM/Factory and aftermarket) and I’m lucky to have the Factory Service Manual, so I guess it works out some how.

I’ll post pictures of the newly installed W8 Dome Light soonish.

iPhone 3G – Finally

June 17th, 2008

Okay, so last Monday (June 9th), Steve Jobs took center stage at the WWDC 2008 and made some awesome announcements regarding the iPhone’s 2.0 Firmware that’s scheduled to be released “Early July,” after which, other Apple head honchos got on stage and talked about the 2.0 Firmware upgrade. Some developers got up, talked about their newest developments for the iPhone using the SDK – blah, blah, blah.

About an hour and a half later, Steve Jobs reclaimed the stage to thank everyone for coming and commented that WWDC 2008 is the first time a WWDC has been sold out. All 5,000+ seats were filled – from press, to staff, to developers, every seat was filled.

But just before Steve released the conference, he made his most important announcement since the original iPhone. The announcement everyone’s been waiting for – the iPhone 3G. Steve continued for about 20 minutes talking about the iPhone 3G and their plan for world domination in the smartphone market. In my opinion, they have a strong product, but growth in the Asian markets is going to be slower than expected.

Melted MagSafe Power Adapter

April 29th, 2008

So, last night I was sitting on the sofa watching TV and charging my Early 2006 model Apple MacBook notebook. I finished up some work, did some surfing, chatting, etc. while waiting waiting for my battery to charge up.

I decided to pack things up around 9:30, only once I starting to wrap up my power adaptor I noticed something on my power adaptor – the cable from the power adaptor frayed and melted at the block – photos below:

Death of the 1997 Jetta

May 3rd, 2007

I was riding with mom (we shared the use of the car) after having lunch with dad. She was driving down Old Norcross Rd., we were coming through the intersection of Old Norcross and Cruse Rd. and this guy in a 2000 Toyota Camry was in the right turn lane onto Old Norcross, but instead of yielding to us, he decides he want’s to go straight – from a right turn-only lane, with a red light.

He came straight through and hit the front passanger door (my door),  his front bumper support caught the door jam of the rear door on the right side of the Jetta and just tore through the door like a can opener, the front bumper of his car smashed into the right rear wheel well pushing the rear wheel into the car, bending and damaging the sub-frame of the car.
